2012 Summer Institutes Rationale and Design Protocol

Rationale:
As DPI works to support Professional Learning Communities within and across districts and schools, it is important to keep the educators of North Carolina grounded in the following questions:
  1. What do we want students to learn?
  2. How will we know if they have learned it?
  3. How will we respond when they don’t learn it?
  4. How will we respond when they already know it?
Summer Institute 2011, by design, focused primarily on question number 1 above as we reviewed and explored the expectations of the North Carolina Common Core and Essential Standards.
Proceeding from that foundation, SI 2012 will move further into the remaining questions. The following topics logically connect to the work:
  • Building Data Literacy(How will we know if they have learned it?)
  • Connecting to Serve All Students (How will we respond when they don’t learn it? How will we respond when they already know it?)
One recommendation from the RttT Evaluation Team is strengthen cross-divisional work at NCDPI (report, pp. 31-32).
To offer the most aligned and integrated experience for 2012 Summer Institute participants, cross-division presentation teams will design and facilitate the sessions. The topics above will be embedded into each content session.
Design Protocol:
  • Operate in a collaborative presentation mode (report, pp. 31-32). The goal for SI 2012 is collaborative facilitation.
  • Enable learning with authentically embedded technology tools and resources (report, p. 11)
  • Fully engage participants, with activities that allow them to read, write, listen, and speak in order to reach a deeper understanding of the ideas and concepts of the session (report, page 42)
  • Make specific connections that showcase alignment to the Professional Educator Standards & Instructional Technology Standards
  • Include Kenan Fellows in the design and delivery
  • Gather formative data by providing an evaluation for participants at the conclusion of each session,
    • Review data with presentation team; these will not be collected by the Leadership Team.
    • Set priorities and action steps for next session.

Districts have requested focused time that may be dedicated to the work of their individual teams (report, p. 44). In order to meet this need, we will offer Facilitated Planning Time. During this session, DPI will act as a facilitator, supporting the unique work and priorities of each team. There will be little or no direct delivery of information during these sessions. Facilitators will need to be able to support the team, “where they are,” and offer guidance and support as they collaborate. Facilitators will come from all divisions represented – ERD, IT, and C&I. We will plan this session during our customized consulting sessions via NC LTI.

In order to meet the above goals, each team will…
  1. Determine team lead-this lead could be from any of the divisions represented – ERD, IT, or C& I
  2. Establish group norms and strategies for enforcing the norms –recommendations from Learning Forward on how to do this are posted to the wiki.
  3. Devote time to “getting to know each other”.
  4. Establish a meeting schedule with dates, times, and locations; consider virtual meetings as well.
  5. Use http://si2012.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/ as a collaborative workspace. Post the information below by the deadlines.

Software/Hardware Web Resources
In an effort to prepare districts for the hardware, applications software and web resources we anticipate using this summer, each content area should provide their technology needs on the google document. ALL software, hardware, URL's and Web tools to be used during the Summer Institutes should be included. This will give the districts an opportunity to confirm that these resources are available prior to session dates. It is important that ALL resources needed for sessions are shared. Please record your needs on the google document by May 25.
